FROZE TO DEATH

Feckless mum whose baby ‘turned blue’ and died on balcony in -20C says she thought ‘fresh air’ would help his teething

A WOMAN whose baby “turned blue” and froze to death when she left him on a balcony exposed to “minus 20C” temperatures says she thought the “fresh air” would help his teething.

The 40-year-old mother has defended herself, even though she admitted to falling asleep while her seven month old son was left outside to sleep in his pram and exposed to deep Russian winter cold.

Reports claim the baby - who the authorities say was also underweight - was left outside for five hours through the night.

The woman, Anna Sh - whose name has been changed for legal reasons - is now under house arrest and facing criminal investigation.

Her three other children are in the care of relatives in Nikolaevsk-on-Amur, in the Russian Pacific region of Khabarovsk.

In a statement which expressed no regret, the mother said: “He cried that night, I thought he was teething.”

“I put him on the balcony to sleep in his pram.”

“I thought he would feel better in the fresh air, and sleep normally without crying.”

She called the ambulance when she woke and, after making a meal for her elder children, found her son had “turned blue” on the balcony.

The detained woman - whose eldest child is 17 - said: “The colour of his urine was a normal. “

“He didn’t have fever."

“Many examinations will be carried out, they will show the cause of death."

“I rely on the investigation to find out the truth and real reason why my baby died.”

“I was taken for a medical examination for drugs and alcohol.”

“They didn’t find any traces.”

The mother says the temperature on the balcony - which though unheated, she claims was enclosed by glass - was minus 4C when police investigators arrived.

She also said the child had been well wrapped in a padded blanket folded four times, swaddled in a camel wool blanket, and had a sheepskin coat on his outer layer.

Viktoria Tregubenko, commissioner for children's rights in Khabarovsk region, said: “This family was not classified as socially disadvantaged.

“The mother had not been under special supervision by social services.”

The commissioner said the investigation is ongoing.

She added: “It will establish the exact circumstances of what happened.”

The Russian Investigative Committee said the baby was found “without external signs of violent death”.
