Meanwhile, Chelsea have begun talks with £60m-rated Timo Werner, but face stiff competition with Liverpool - while the Blues are also hoping to snatch Lewis Dunk from Brighton.

Inter Milan are growing even more confident of Christian Eriksen arriving this month and hope the Dane will watch their clash against Cagliari next Sunday.

The Dane is out of contract in the summer and is expected to leave in the winter transfer window – with Inter the hot favourites.

Jose Mourinho had recently blasted the Italian giants for their pursuit of the Spurs midfielder.

But that has not stopped the San Siro outfit from pressing on with the deal, as Correire dello Sport report that Eriksen's agent is in London to finalise the deal.

Chelsea are set to launch a £48m bid to sign Lewis Dunk from Brighton.

Frank Lampard is keen to strengthen his backline, with just four senior centre-backs including injury-prone Antonio Rudiger, youngster Fikayo Tomori and the inconsistent Andreas Christensen and Kurt Zouma.

Bournemouth's Nathan Ake had been a target in a move that would see the Dutchman return to Stamford Bridge.

But the Daily Star report that 28-year-old Dunk is the preferred target – and the £48m fee would be the fourth-highest for an English defender.

Newcastle are in talks with Inter Milan over a potential loan move for Valentino Lazaro.

The Austrian winger – who can also play at full-back – has struggled for regular game time since joining from Hertha Berlin in the summer.

And PA reports that his agent was on Tyneside as the Magpies beat Chelsea on Saturday.

Italian media are already revealing that an agreement has been made between Newcastle and Inter Milan that would see the 23-year-old join until the end of the season.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has all-but ruled out a move for Victor Wanyama this month, claiming the Scottish champions cannot afford him.

Wanyama left the Hoops back in 2013, moving to Southampton and then Tottenham.

And while Lennon is keen on his return, the Kenyan would cost a fortune for the Scots.

As reported by Daily Record, Lennon said on potential new arrivals: “Ideally, yeah, they’d be starters. What we are looking for is to add one or two, like an Elyounoussi type, who are ready to come in and play straight away with a bit more experience and physicality.

“Against Rangers, we looked like we lacked a little bit of nous and experience, a little bit of physicality, so they are areas we’re looking at to bring in.

“We’ve room for manoeuvre to bring one or two more in.

“He’s [Wanyama's] in my thoughts but could we afford him? I doubt it very much.

“The problem is where to fit him in. I don’t think that’s going to be an option.”

Man Utd would be better off signing Jack Grealish over Bruno Fernandes, according to former Arsenal defender Paul Merson.

Sporting Lisbon star Fernandes has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this month – but the deal has hit a snag with the clubs unable to agree on a fee.

Yet, Merson believes they should forget about the Portuguese international and aim for Aston Villa's attack-minded midfielder.

Talking in his column for Daily Star, the ex-England star said: “Forget Bruno Fernandes – Manchester United should be trying to sign Jack Grealish.

“He is one of the top ten players in the Premier League right now. He is absolutely different class and would walk into almost any other Premier League team.

“Grealish would walk into the United team. Tottenham tried to get him not long ago and he’d walk into their team right now as well.

“I can’t explain to people how good this kid is. Aston Villa lost 6-1 to Manchester City and he was the only one who still had time on the ball.

“His composure is something else. I don’t understand why clubs aren’t queuing up to try and sign him. Is it because he’s English but isn’t playing for England?

“Bruno Fernandes is a full international. He’s had clubs all over Europe looking at him. But he’s never played in this league before. Grealish has. And he’s ripping it up every week.”
