POPULAR sex supplements for men are likely to flop, a study suggests.

Ingredients such as horny goat weed and ginseng will not boost stamina or give fellas a lift, researchers have found.

Erectile dysfunction affects up to half of men aged 40 to 70 — and Amazon has pages dedicated to supplements said to treat the condition naturally.

But a study of its six highest-rated found they were unlikely to work.

There was little scientific basis for the claims about the 21 most popular ingredients, the US researchers found.

Only 17 per cent of human studies into them reported improvement in erectile function.

The 12,840 reviews on Alpha XR also suggest they fail to stand up to scrutiny by customers.

After filtering out probable fake reviews, the number reporting improved strength fell by 77 per cent. Reports of an improved ability to maintain an erection drooped by 83 per cent while those claiming more satisfaction fell 90 per cent.

The researchers, from Baylor College of Medicine in Texas, recommend proven treatments, such as Viagra, or talking therapies.

Amazon declined to comment on the supplements but said they take action against people who post fake reviews.
They added: “We are able to assess review authenticity by looking at data points like reviewer, seller, or product history which [analysis websites] do not have access to and therefore cannot concretely determine the authenticity of a review.”
